iPod is yet another revolutionary product from Apple that has changed the very way music lovers go for music. A large number of music can be saved in an organized manner on your iPod and can be carried along any where any time. You can even view the motion videos of the music you are listening on the iPod. The software that is responsible for data transfer between your computer and your iPod is your iTune. But many times it is noticed that while synchronizing iPod or changing iPod setting or conducting restore operation of iPod from within iTunes, you find one of the following error message that reads:
“The iPod "Customer's iPod" cannot be updated. An unknown error occurred (-50)”
or
“The disk could not be read from or written to”
or
“The iPod "Customer's iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1418, 1429, 1430, 1436 or 1439)”
Causes:
The causes responsible for the above error messages is the digital signing of Windows XP drivers.
Resolution:
The resolution to the above error message restore the iPod using latest version of iTune. If you are unable to fix the problem with this step, perform the following procedures:
- Disconnect the iPod from your computer and close the iTunes
- Highlight all the following texts which has regsvr32 as the beginning text

regsvr32 /s gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 /s sccbase.dll

Click on the Copy option from the Edit menu of your web browser
- Navigate Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad to reach the Notepad program
- Choose Paste from the Edit menu from the Notepad option
- Select the Save As option from the File menu
- Type appleipod.bat as the File name and save the file on the desktop
- Close Notepad and locate the appleipod.bat file
- Double click on the file. A black screen appears within a minute. Wait till the black window disappears and then follow the next step. This will delete the appleipod.bat file
- Open iTunes and connect the iPod
- This would lead to appearance of iPod in the iTunes. Restore the iPod and synchronize the content
